Ludhiana: The textile and garment manufacturers have once again raked up the issue of scrapped textile park project which was scheduled to come up at Ludhiana’s Mattewara. Businessmen are upset over the failure of state government to revive this project even after eight months.
They said the state government must make efforts to set up a textile park and that too in Ludhiana where ample land is available.
Vinod Thapar, chairman of Apparel Technology and Common Facilitation Centre, said, “On July 11, 2022, the prestigious textile park project was scrapped by the Punjab government. Till now, no efforts have been made even to find out an alternate location in Ludhiana for this project which would have proved to be game changer for the textile and garment industry of Ludhiana. It seems that state government deliberately does not want to pursue this project for which budget of thousands of crores has already been earmarked by the Centre.”
Thapar said, “In case the state government is serious about this project, then there is no better time than this budget to confirm about it and earmark funds from its side as well. As far as the location of this project is concerned, the government should get a survey conducted on Alamgir-Malerkotla Road and Raikot as huge chunks of land are available at both the locations.”
Harish Kairpal, finance secretary of Knitwear Club, said, “As far as the textile park project is concerned, the state government made efforts to offer land to the Centre in Fatehgarh Sahib district for the textile park project, but there has been no positive development. As local residents were against the project’s initial location at Mattewara, the industry did not object to scrapping of it, but the state government backed out of this project, which would have proved beneficial for the industry as well as state.”
Kairpal said, “We once again urge chief minister Bhagwant Mann to immediately form a panel comprising senior officials of the state government and industrialists which can make efforts to ensure that the textile park project sees the light of day. We also want to clear that industry will no way accept this project it is located out of Ludhiana. It will be of any use if set up anywhere else. ”
